Symphony

After all these years of people putting me down because I am Dyslexic and Right brained It is wonderful for me to start having my day with all the other Dyslexics in the world.

As I was reading these are the thing that came to my mind.

Getting rid of state test and only have them for the monumental years such as 8th and 11th grade.

Portfolio reviews each year with Administrators, supervisors, and lead teachers expecting them for content. In the 1 & 5th and the Middle of 12th grade do portfolios like APA's that are submitted into the state for grading. Why these years 1st starting to read and do more complex mathematics, 5th grade going into middle school, 12 Graduation requirements.

Curriculum: Becomes less book based and more hands on interactive based like hands on projects. Less rote memorization and more projects.

On page 136 he talks about boundary crosses. I can be considered one of those because when I first was looking for a teaching job, I went looking for a job as a Tech Ed teacher. Each school I interviewed at I got Hired. I remember one where the first words out of the principal's mouth
was I can't believe the best candidate is a girl for this position. I was offered the position on the spot but, I did not take the position because of those remarks. I am good at Technology because it allows me to be creative. The parts of technology that I am not good at is programming which is the more logical, and needs language ability, and less artistic talent.

You mention the computer programming- obviously creativity is important, but so is the logical side. School needs to focus on developing both!

I totally agree on that statement, but right now we focuses 99% on passing tests and not enough on the other.

It's interesting how you know exactly why you like and dislike things (e.g. programming because it's more logical) based on your tendency to be either left or right-brained. I think it's very important to learn about ourselves and understand not only why we do things but also why we like things.

Phyliss - I applaud you for not taking the position after hearing that sexist statement! I think it's interesting you bring up technology because there are many symphonic elements to technology, at least in some of the new literacies (such as blogging as we're all doing now) that we as teachers could totally benefit from in our classrooms. Do you use technology in your classroom with your kids?

I use technology as much as possible with my students because it gets them engaged and want to learn.

That's great... it takes a symphonic mind to use technology creatively and I think that's where I'm going to have to work hard as a new teacher. I want my students to engage with the novels and classic texts I'll be teaching in a creative way that utilizes blogging, creating say a Facebook profile for a character in a play we've just read, etc. but at the same time I want to teach them other skills with reading and writing that they don't do with those new literacies and won't learn anywhere else... it's a hard balance!

You will find a lot of great new technology for any subject. The hardest part is picking out what you want to do. Once you embrace it, you should find it very easy to manage.

1) I think creating a facebook profile for a character is the best idea I've heard in a while. The kids would be so interested!!!!

2) You must have really hated Hirsch and his beliefs in memorization and less projects....

3)I think we need a bit from each of these philosophies, and as Barry said, kids need the skills and resources to develop in both ways, even if they grow to lead more toward one side

I can't take credit for the Character/Facebook assignment.. a friend of mine thought of it when we were presenting to a class over the summer on utilizing new literacies. It's a fantastic idea actually and I think it can be extended to having students create dating profiles of characters or professional/job profiles as well (all depending on grade level and what you're reading of course).

I love your bit on technology, I myself am very techonolgically savy. Many people dont understand my passion and how I can be taught something once and just continue to develop new skills and adapt the programs to fit my needs. I also agree it's important for classrooms to be round in the since of letting students develop a mutlitude of skills, testing is just one. What does testing really tell us?

I totally agree with you that technology can help students with a multitude of skill. But, the students should not just rely on technology to help them with all their problem. My students try and use a calculator as much as possible and I will not let them because then they will not know how to Multiply, Divide or even subtract.
